BURN OFF THOSE HOLIDAY CALORIES

6/5/2014

The arrival of April and May provides us with the Easter break and a total of 3 bank-holiday weekends. Whether you have indulged in Easter eggs or alcohol, here are 5 ways to burn 1,000 calories; which is the average calorie content of a packaged Easter egg, or 4 pints of beer.

1. The fastest way to get rid of that chocolate egg is to run. If you ran constantly for around an hour you would need to be running at 7mph to burn 1,000 calories. If your level of fitness can’t maintain this, drop the speed to 5mph and run for 80 minutes.

2. A more exciting alternative is kick-boxing where you can burn around 900 calories per hour depending on your effort! A great way to burn 1,000 calories is to book in a session with a personal trainer and opt for a high intensity boxercise style workout that will condition your whole body.

3. If one-on-one training isn’t your style, then opt for a class. A high-impact aerobics class will burn around 600 calories, follow this by a low-impact aerobics class which typically burns 400 calories and the job is done!

4. If you enjoy being in the water then swimming is also fantastic for burning calories, depending how hard you push yourself! A casual swim will only burn 400 calories an hour meaning you would need to be in the pool for over 2hours (and could turn in to a prune). Just over an hour of breaststroke, or an hour of butterfly will burn around 1,000 calories.

5. You can also work out at home! Housework and chores are a great way to burn calories and just because you aren’t in the gym, it doesn’t mean you are not working out. Tasks like cleaning and vacuuming can burn up to 450 calories an hour, so you will soon be on your way to your 1,000 calorie target.

4/4/2014

Vitamin C is arguably the most famous nutrient and the majority of people know which foods contain this immune boosting vitamin. Even though we know where to find it, a lot of us still don’t take on enough Vitamin C in our diets.

An estimated 25% of men and 16% of women in the UK have vitamin C deficiency.

So, how can you avoid becoming a statistic? Here are 5 ways that you can enjoy vitamin C this weekend.

1, Vodka and orange.

It is Friday after all, so how about a vodka and orange instead of vodka and coke tonight?

2, Pumpkin soup.

Add a couple of chillies and a cooling splash of crème fraiche for a delicious starter or snack.

3, Cantaloupe melon with Parma Ham/Prosciutto.

A mouth-watering starter that delivers both nutrients and taste.

4, Saag Gosht.

In other words a lamb and spinach curry. Replace the lamb with a lean meat if you are counting the calories.

5, Roast turkey.

Complement with veg such as sweet potato and cranberry sauce to maximise the amount of Vitamin C. But don’t scrimp on the trimmings; simply have a smaller portion if required

Turkey vs. chicken

Chicken

Although turkey is available in the supermarket all year round, it is certainly more seasonal than chicken which can lead to inflated prices.

Chicken is a great source of protein and contains double the amount of protein than turkey.

If you need to watch your sodium intake chicken is the better choice. Turkey contains 10 times more sodium, so chicken is the sensible choice for stabilising your blood pressure.

Turkey

Turkey is a great choice for a healthy diet. It is high in protein and low in fat and it is extremely versatile. The leanest cut of turkey is a boneless, skinless turkey breast.

If you are looking to keep the calories as low as possible then turkey is the better choice. On average it contains 2/3 of the amount of calories that a chicken breast has.

Turkey also contains less fat than chicken.  On average a chicken breast contains 5 times more fat than a turkey breast. It is also lower in saturated fat, making it the healthier choice.

Turkey and chicken can be used pretty much interchangeably. You can keep the calorie count of both turkey and chicken breast low if you cook with minimal or no oil.

But which one is best?

Chicken has more calories, fat and cholesterol.  As a result, chicken is tastier and is a better source of nutrients such as Vitamin B6, phosphorous and protein, whilst remaining low in sodium. I think alternating between the two allows you to make the most of both. However, turkey is better for weight loss because of its lower calorie content.

What do you think?
